“Then Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them live, and the leaders of the assembly ratified it by oath.” Joshua 9:15 NIV
Moral of the story: Beware of who you make agreements with!
The Gibeonites were a double edged sword to the Israelites. Clearly their lies were the downfall. One lie led to another. These lies cursed the Gibeonites into generations of servitude. However, their faith and prudence were recognized by God. That is why they were spared. They decided to take a different course that the other clans of the region. They singularly decided it was better to submit to the Israelites than to be at war with them. Nor did they wait for destruction. They were proactive.
The Israelites took all the precautions that you or I would do to ensure a sound decision. They were very adept at trading, bartering and negotiating. However, they did not pause to get input from God. Everything looked good from a logical perspective (everything they could see, taste and touch) and they hastily moved forward. It wasn’t until three days later they found out they had been duped.
We can be deceived and vulnerable to bad partnerships and agreements, even fraud, when we do not consult with God.
Father, thank you for Your tender grace and mercy. Help me to remember to consult You and seek Your way in all things.
