Five Stones

“Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine.” 1 Samuel 17:40 NIV

So, why five stones?  What did they signify? Borrowing from Max Lucado’s “Facing Your Giants,” they represented:

  • Stone of the Past
  • Stone of Prayer
  • Stone of Priority
  • Stone of Passion
  • Stone of Persistence

The Past. Take account of God’s victories. See what God has done before. Remember!

Prayer. Pray hard and long. Prayer is essential in warfare.

Priority. God is number one. Peace is promised to the one who fixes their thoughts and desires on God.

Passion. Emphasis on God as Lord.  Recognition of His Almighty Power.  His Omniscience, His Omnipotence, His Omnipresence.

Persistence.  Never give up. One prayer might not be enough. One apology might not do it. One day or month of resolve might not suffice. You might get knocked down a time or two…but don’t quit.

Father, Thank you for all You have already done for me! I pray for Your will not mine. Instill in me a passionate desire for all things of You.

Deuteronomy 29:9-13, Ephesians 6:18, 1 Samuel 30:6, Psalm 59:16, 57:1-2; Isaiah 26:3
