“Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God.” 2 Corinthians 3:5 NIV
I invested a lot of time and energy proving my competence. Competitively seeking to be the best. Working to influence things in my favor. I know I stepped on a few folks along the way. After a lifetime of it, I can tell you it’s exhausting. It’s full of fear, compromise, anxiety, and looking over your shoulder to see who’s on your heels. It is driven by a world of “what have you done for me lately.” It is full of grumbling and complaining and worry about whether we are receiving our fair share.
Don’t get me wrong. We each have God given strengths and talents we are to use in excellence. But that excellence does not come at the price of others. God’s way is so different. His way lifts people up along the way. It’s a way of encouragement and fulfillment. We are looking ahead to fulfill our purpose and destiny rather than behind at what may be trying to rob us of the position we worked so hard for. Because everything we have comes from the power of God within us and not our own effort. It’s bigger in purpose and intent. It’s supernatural.
It comes from a perspective of service. Service to others; thinking more highly of others than we do of ourselves. What would life be like if we considered how competent we are in serving others? That is where we can truly shine. We can set our own self-interests aside. We can shine like stars with a kingdom purpose and perspective.
Father, thank you for showing me what a servant leader looks like in Your Son, Jesus Christ. Give me a heart that is competent to serve.
